Things He Said Today

By Joe Johnson, Beatle Brunch Host

“I got sunshine on a cloudy day. When it’s cold outside, I got the month of May.”  These words were sung by The (Fab) Four Tops in 1964, and now that the warm month of May is upon us, things for Sir Paul AND Beatle Brunch are heating up.

In just a few days (May 4) Paul kicks off his “Out There” tour from Brazil and wraps it 3 months later, August 14th, in Regina, Canada.  In between he’ll visit Orlando, Austin, Memphis, Tulsa, Brooklyn, Indy, DC and a host of other cities all across the world, but none will be as poignant and emotional as Paul’s July 9th return to Fenway Park in Boston.  Security will be as tight as tickets and no doubt, Sir Paul will bestow a heart-felt honor to those lost in the horrific marathon bombing.

But getting a Ticket to Ride is not as easy as it sounds. Macca website members can purchase tickets on-line pre-sale, but as a guy who tried for Orlando and Brooklyn, pickings were slim if at all. On the official release morning, it took up to 8 minutes of entering cryptic letters in the space provided before one was shown that “sorry, no tickets match your description”.  Full disclosure: there were “Hot Sound Package” tickets and “Front Row” starting at $1500 a piece. A bit too much for this Beatle Bud.  I did manage to score a pair of “cheap seats” ($105) for Orlando, so look for me changing light bulbs on the ceiling of The Amway Center on May 18th.

For just $50 more, you can OWN a piece of Paul. The highly anticipated remastered “Wings Over America” set comes out on May 28th.  It will be available in several configurations, but devoted fans might opt for the Deluxe page, which includes too much memorabilia to list, so here’s the official link:
http://www.paulmccartney.com/news-blogs/news/27499-wings-over-america-to-be-reissued-in-may

If you’ll be in Ft. Lauderdale May 16th, get tickets to join me at the South Florida premiere of “Rockshow” happening at the Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival’s theater in downtown Ft. Lauderdale.  I’ll be hosting the South Florida premiere with lots of Wings prizes before we light up the screen with the remastered tour film that won rave reviews when it premiered in 1980.  Go to www.fliff.com for tickets.

And lastly, I told you The Brunch was heating up in May as well.  Well, on May 31, Beatle Brunch turns legal. That’s right, we’ll be 21, so we invite you to party with us all year and join us in Cancun for the ultimate 50th Anniversary Celebration.

Why Don’t He Do It On The Road

By Tee Eff

10 SONGS PAUL HAS NEVER PERFORMED IN CONCERT THAT I’D LOVE TO HEAR WHILE HE’S “OUT THERE”

It’s shaping up to be quite a summer for Paul McCartney fans. As Brunchers know, May will see the long awaited release of the “Wings Over America” deluxe box set, followed by the remastered “Rock Show” on DVD (which will also be shown in theaters. Check RockShowOnScreen.com for listings) and we’ve already been treated to a special limited edition 12” single with four different live versions of “Maybe I’m Amazed”, the top-10 single lifted from the classic 1976 live album. But of course NOTHING compares to the excitement of Paul hitting the road for his “Out There” tour lined up for the coming months.

Beatle Brunchers lucky enough to have scored tickets for these concerts are no doubt making their mental lists of songs they’d love to hear Paul play. With his embarrassingly rich Beatles, Wings and solo catalogs, it’s virtually impossible to play EVERYBODY’S list of favorites and guilty pleasures, but here’s MY list of 10 I’d love to hear him perform, which he has never included in any of his concert set lists over the years:

1.  Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey
2.  With A Little Luck

• A pair of #1 hits from the 1970’s, the first from his classic “Ram” album, the latter from Wings’ very under-rated “London Town” collection.
3.  Helen Wheels – a top-10 hit single from 1973, which was added to US pressings of the epic “Band On The Run” album, this one is a nice little nod to a band’s life on the road - very fitting, and a great 50’s style rocker that would play well in concert.
4.  Back Seat of My Car – from “Ram” - this one works well in the piano set.
5.  Oh! Darling – as Paul is closing in on 71, this one might prove to be a challenge vocally, but a great rocker from the Beatles “Abbey Road” album.
6.  Rocky Raccoon – from “The Beatles (White Album)”. Much less demanding, but a solid choice for the mid-show acoustic set given its natural sing-along structure.
7.  A World Without Love – a few years back, Paul hauled out “Come and Get It”, a composition he gave to the Apple Records band Badfinger which became their first big hit, for a few European dates (otherwise this one would have topped my own personal list, as he’s never performed it here in America!). Similarly, “A World Without Love”, given to 60’s pop duo Peter & Gordon, went on to be a #1 hit. It would be nice for Paul to reclaim this one (and “Come and Get It”) for a future live album. You can hear Paul’s original demo for this one in BBC DOWNLOADS Audio!
8.  Summer of ’59 -  a neat little acoustic song, running just under two minutes, which only ever appeared as the B-side of the vinyl single for “Jenny Wren” back in 2005. This one has never appeared on a McCartney album, or in any CD or digital form for that matter. Perfect for the mid-show solo set.
9.  Your Mother Should Know – reintroduced to many fans as the grand finale of last year’s re-release of the Beatles movie “Magical Mystery Tour”, this is another great sing-along (and dance-along!) number.
10.  Return To Pepperland – in the great tradition of “Wings Over America”, where he performed (and in fact closed the show with) “Soily”, how about including a previously unreleased song in the set? This one emanates from the mid-to-late 1980’s, around the time of Sgt. Pepper’s 20th anniversary. With its obvious Beatles connection, and given the potential for appropriate video accompaniment on the big screens (as anyone who’s ever seen Macca’s pre-show montages can attest) this would give many folks a big kick.

Be sure to visit The BBC Chat Room and FabForum to hook up with your fellow Brunchers when Paul comes to your town. FYI - I’ll be at the Barclay’s Center in the garden spot of the world (and Joe J’s hometown!), Brooklyn, USA. And please drop by to see me at NJPAC, May 19 (read the article at BrunchRadio.com).

We’ll see you “Out There”!

L J’s latest CD is titled, Under an Indigo Sky. It goes on sale May 21st, and right as rain it’s an award winning album for sure. He’s back in the states after a 5 engagement tour of Japan. He told Beatle Brunch the audience was quite receptive, sort of a ‘cult-like’ crowd that refueled on his presence as the man who played lead guitar with Paul’s Wings. For now L J’s hands are full of upcoming tour dates. He may be in your area so check’em out by visiting LaurenceJuber.com

In June look for L J in our Beatle Brunch Club Chat Room. AND continue reading in ARTICLES on BrunchRadio.com.

Wings Over America

This new project is broken into three stages:

The album will be reissued May 27, 2013 in a range of formats, including a standard edition (which is available for pre-order at Amazon.com) and a four-book, four-disc (3CD, 1DVD) Deluxe Edition Box Set. The box set’s audio and video include the two-disc Wings Over America remastered at Abbey Road, a bonus audio disc recorded live at San Francisco’s Cow Palace, a bonus DVD containing the rarely seen 75-minute television special Wings Over the World and a photo gallery montage titled “Photographer’s Pass.”

The Deluxe Edition Box Set contains four exquisitely rendered art books packaged with an array of memorabilia, souvenirs, mementos, keepsakes and never-before-seen photos and art work from Wings' 1976 tour. The 110-page tour book recounts the behind-the-scenes drama through dozens of live performances and backstage photos along with new interviews and liner notes from eminent music journalist David Fricke.

The leatherette-bound “Tour Itinerary” contains memorabilia including printed 8-by-10 glossy band photos, a backstage guest pass, facsimiles of the invitation to the end-of-tour party at the Harold Lloyd Estate in Beverly Hills along with Wings over America concert tickets, original album art work, tour posters, set lists, lyrics, press materials and more. “Look," the box set’s book of Linda McCartney photography, features Paul and the band in their everyday life as they made their way across the country in the spring of ’76.

Rockshow DVD/Blu-ray Release
For the first time, Wings' Rockshow concert film will be available on DVD and Blu-ray on June 10. The film, which was shot in 1975 and 1976, was premiered in November 1980 in New York and April 1981 in London. The film, which features a full-length concert, has been fully restored from the original 35mm film with restored and remastered sound, including a 5.1 mix.

Rockshow Theatrical Release
Rockshow will hit theaters for one night only on May 15, 2013. The film, which will be shown at 500-plus cinemas across the world, features an introduction by McCartney.
